Perfect....... September 5, 2009 B. Dwyer (San Luis Obispo, CA) 23 out of 23 found this review helpful
Recently started to upgrade the home entertainment system. Wanted to eliminate all of the cables and get better video. Added a Sony blu-ray player and Onkyo TX-SR507. That installation is easy, you simply plug in the HDMI cables. I had XM running on the sound system for my home music. Recently found Pandora, and love that it provides music and NO taking like XM has become. I was a little nervous when I saw the previous reviews on this item. But, I had the right receiver so it should work?! The installation began with me on the floor with the iPod in the Onkyo UP-A1 and the wife ready to call out instructions. I plugged the cord into the Universal Port in the receiver, turn on the iPod and pushed the receiver's 'Port' selector and the music began to playing through the system. It could not be more simple. Just make sure you have the right receiver.
Works perfectly for compatible devices January 5, 2010 Sacaudos (Montana) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
It's sad to see the negative reviews, since the people posting the negative reviews probably didn't do their research to determine if (and to what level) their receiver is compatible. It's important to read your receiver manual and check the manufacturer's site BEFORE selecting a docking station to make sure everything will be compatible. Before placing an order, it's a good idea to try to download the manuals from the manufacturer's website first to make sure they will be compatible (Onkyo lets anyone download their manuals). Don't rely on Amazon or other retailers to provide the best product descriptions. Retailers don't know all the details (they didn't manufacture the product) and usually make mistakes in product descriptions. I always go straight to the manufacturer. Plus, it's best to make sure the retailer is an official retailer of the manufacturer to ensure the best warranty coverage.
As for the product, it performs as advertised. We have the Onkyo TX-NR807 receiver and 2 different generation iPods that both have video capability. The video picture is great, although of course it's not a high quality DVD or blu-ray picture, which I wouldn't expect anyway. In order to view video, you have to use the receiver's STANDARD mode display and NOT extended mode. You also have to make sure that when you select a video to watch, you choose "TV on" on the iPod. As long as the settings are correct, it works flawlessly. The only improvement that I can think of is that it would be nice if the extended mode worked with video so that you wouldn't have to operate the iPod manually to set up video display. The only other concern is that Onkyo cannot control future iPod updates, which could affect how the Onkyo remote works with iPod functions, but hopefully they will be able to provide firmware updates to handle any changes made by Apple. Having an Onkyo with network capabilities makes updating much easier, too. The great advantage of this particular docking station is that you can use the Onkyo remote to control the iPod (in extended mode) AND no additional A/V or charging cables are needed. The iPod is charged by the receiver via the universal port. Awesome!
Great January 29, 2010 Douglas (Illinois) I paired this with an Onkyo TX-SR707 and it does exactly what I thought it would do. I'd love to have album covers displayed as well and a few other things, but it does do what it says.
Plug & Play July 19, 2010 tonikins Works perfectly. Just plugged this into the port on the back of my Onkyo PR SC 5507 and it started working immediatly. The Onkyo remote is able to control all of the basic funtions while my iPhone 3GS is docked, however more advanced navigations are a bit tricky (such as album search, genius play lists etc.)
The sound is excellent, however the video images are not that impressive. I believe this has more to do with the source than the actual unit itself.
Would highly recommend this product.
So Easy A _________ Can Do It (You Fill In The Blank) July 28, 2010 Auditman6 Received my Onkyo UP-A1 Dock (UP) which I'm connecting to my Onkyo TX-SR707 that drives with Martin Logan speakers. Noticed the thick instruction book for the UP, then saw that instructions are written in twelve languages. Connection instructions: Plug the UP into the Universal Port on the Onkyo; that's it. Plugged my iPod Nano 5th gen into the UP, pushed the Port button on the Onkyo remote, then Play and am in iPod playback heaven. Only 4 stars for Sound quality because on some songs I have to really reduce the volume because the bass from the Martin Logan sub-woofer shakes the room. Will either have to dial-back the sub-woofer or set the Nano equalizer to Flat to solve this "problem". ;>) Couldn't be happier.
